The Historic Crail Ranch is a must-see when visiting Big Sky, Montana. Open for visitors on weekends from July through August, this unique log home tells the story of the Crail family and their life in the early 1900s. It will be a fascinating experience for both young and old.
The Historic Crail Ranch is Big Sky's original homestead, the main house built by Eugene Crail when he returned to the area after World War I. He hand-chiseled the logs and built the home with loving care. The main house and cabin are all that remain of the original ranch. They are now restored to their original beauty, with sweeping and lovely views of the Madison Range, the Gallatin Canyon and the Spanish Peaks.
The Crail Ranch story started with a man named Franklin Crail. He came with his wife and three children to what was to become Big Sky. He homesteaded 160 acres for a hay cutting operation. Eugene, Franklin's son, returned to the land to build the large home with the carpentry skills he learned in the Army. This lovely restored home now contains furniture that was typical of that used by the Crails in the late 1800s.
