LONE PEAK

And then there is Big Sky's Lone Peak. A skier's mountain if ever there was one. With a summit elevation of 11,166 feet, Lone Peak has some of the best expert skiing in Montana.

Lone Peak – the best skiing in Montana!

BIG SKY – THE MOST SKIING TERRAIN IN MONTANA

Big Sky is located in the Spanish Peaks mountain range. And the ski area itself is built on and around the mountain summit of Lone Peak. Big Sky has the widest variety as well as the most skiing terrain of any ski area in Montana, more than 3,600 acres. And get this – all of it is skiable! Big Sky also has more vertical rise than any other Montana ski area, a huge 4,350 feet!

Skiing down from the summit of Lone Peak presents the choice of several directions. The first route is right back down beneath the tram. The second route is down the South Face. And the third is to ski down Liberty Bowl.

Lone Peak Tram. The very name can send chills down an extreme skier's back. It first lifted skiers and boarders to a lofty 11,150 feet during the winter of 1996, and since then has become a legend.

This is by far the most difficult route down. One false move on the Big Couloir trail and there can easily be quite unpleasant consequences. But, thankfully, there is a good view of the trails and lines because the tram goes right above it.

The most popular route down from the Lone Peak summit is the South Face and the South Wall.

Skiing down the south side of the summit of Lone Peak provides access to two excellent double diamond skiing areas, while not being quite as death-defying as the ski trails below the tram.

The South Face – the most popular route down.

Liberty Bowl is a ski trail that also heads down the south side of the Lone Peak summit. It is, however, unlike every other ski trail off the summit of Lone Peak because it is a single black diamond trail. It makes Liberty Bowl the easiest way down from the summit.

Not only is Liberty Bowl long, it is consistently steep, too. Unlike many steep trails at other ski areas, where steep means a couple of hundred vertical feet, the Liberty Bowl trail is easily 1,500 vertical feet of solidly steep skiing.

NOT FORGETTING THE STUNNING VIEWS
The views from the summit of Lone Peak is outstanding, one of the finest to be found in Montana. If the day is clear, then a ride to the top alone is worth it for the scenery. Three hundred and sixty degree views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including the Tetons, it's nothing short of breathtaking!
You don't even have to ski down. Just ride the tram back.

360 degree views - nothing short of breathtaking!
