Montana is renowned not just for its fishing but for the entire experience it yields: clear, rushing rivers and streams; quiet lakes and secret "cricks"; unrivaled landscapes, mallards aloft and abundant fish below.
Montana is a headwaters state. Pristine waters born in snowmelt grow from unnamed trickles and streams to celebrated rivers like the Missouri, Madison, Yellowstone, Big Hole, Bitterroot, and Bighorn. Some are impounded to form great reservoirs like Fort Peck, Canyon Ferry, Georgetown and Hebgen. Other lakes, like giant Flathead Lake, are natural beauties.
Montana's great fishing is more than a coincidence of climate, geography and geology. Aggressive conservation efforts have resulted in landmark legislation that protects the habitat in which wild trout and other fish species thrive. State fishery and wildlife managers are most concerned with habitat protection, and the results are apparent in creel counts, magazine features, television documentaries and the growing number of anglers attracted to the state each year.
