Although horse and stage coach used to be the main mode of transportation, Billings really began to grow rapidly when the railroad first came to the town. This helped expand its business in energy, transportation, agriculture, and tourism. Downtown is a busy place but there is a definite sense of familiarity no matter where you go. The Yellowstone Art Museum and Yellowstone Western Heritage Museum offer in depth and interesting exhibits on Montana's history and culture. It makes downtown even more interesting to think of the famous personas like Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill, Lewis and Clark, Sitting Bull, and Custer who used to stomp on these grounds frequently.

Billings, MT is surrounded by five mountain ranges: the Bighorns, Beartooths, Crazy Mountains, the Pryor Range, and the Snowy Mountains. Riverton Park is a popular location for walks and picnics. Pictograph Cave State Park holds preserved pictographs which date back to before the time that the Crow Indians inhabited the area. Various reservoirs and golf courses also invite visitors to engage in some fun.

Billings Logan International Airport serves major airlines like United, Delta, and Northwest and offers frequent flights to major cities like Salt Lake City, Denver, Seattle, and Spokane. I-90 and I-94 are Billings' closest interstates. The MET transit system within Billings provides ground transportation in and around town. If you are heading to Big Sky, MT from Billings follow I-90 east for about 140 miles. Exit onto US-191 south to reach Big Sky in about 35 miles.
