Butte, Montana is known to many as "the Richest Hill on Earth." Its first settlers had no idea what wealth and luck they had landed on in the late 1860s. Although minerals like gold and silver first brought people to Butte, other minerals like copper, manganese, zinc, and lead were soon discovered and brought much prosperity to those who found them. Retired mines like the 1800 foot deep Berkeley Pit and mining museums swarm the city and offer an in-depth history to what life was originally like in Butte, MT. During World War I, there was a great need for copper and many miners were put to work in the area at mines like Granite Mountain. Unfortunately a fire broke out and killed many miners during this time and today you can visit Granite Mountain Memorial which was created to honor the many brave miners. Some museums are full of minerals and rocks and others have extensive exhibits on the tools that were used to extract minerals like copper from the depths of Butte. Around 1880 miners found a large deposit of copper. At this time new technology made the process for extracting this mineral much faster. The railroad had also just arrived in Butte. These three factors helped bring business to Butte, as hotels, theatres, and stores quickly popped up all over its downtown area. By 1920 over 100,000 already inhabited the area
