Residing in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Big Sky offers abundant
opportunities for wildlife viewing in its national forest and
neighboring Yellowstone National Park. The park was established
in 1872 and encompasses 2.2 million acres, which include spectacular
alpine lakes and rivers, as well as the geysers, mud caldrons and
bubbling paint pots of worldwide fame. Home to a rich variety of
wildlife, including elk, bison, bears and reintroduced wolves, the area
is alive with big game and also is home to 303 bird species including
eagles, falcons and trumpeter swans.
Wildlife tours can be arranged at any time of year. The spring
and summer seasons bring new life to the mountains. The rivers
begin running strong and the lush landscape comes alive with vegetation
and wildflowers, providing a great environment for the young to explore
and prepare for the winter months that lie ahead. During the
fall, the elk begin bugling and the majority of the wildlife start
their voyage to their winter lands, where they will reside for the
winter months, reserving as much energy as they possible can to ensure
their survival.
There are numerous outfitter services that provide wildlife tours
throughout the year. Guides are highly knowledgeable in the
history, geology, ecology and biology of the Greater Yellowstone
area. Wildlife tours are available from Big Sky, Montana, the
Town of West Yellowstone, and within Yellowstone National Park.
The areas wildlife tours vary in length, mode of transportation, and
