Moose
Of all large mammals living in the Big Sky area, the moose is one of the most revered and sought after for photos. Why? For starters, moose are the least populated of big game animals making them relatively scarce. Two, the male's antlers or "paddles" are truly unique. And three, they are often found in river bottoms and willow groves making them relatively accessible to the average wildlife viewer. more info

Being relatively shy by nature, moose are not to be taken lightly when it comes to approaching them. Their rather dopey appearance and slow temperament often mislead visitors into thinking there are approachable up close. In actuality, moose have relatively poor eye-sight at a distance. They can detect motion, but don't necessarily recognize objects until they are relative close by. Thus, if you all of a sudden show up in their near-field of vision out of the blue, they will be startled and react accordingly. And with moose routinely weighing in at 500-800 lbs on average, you don't want to be in their way when they go ballistic!
Just as with bears, elk and other big game animals, caution should be exercised anytime you are within proximity and visual range of a newborn calf or yearling. It's a safe bet that the mother isn't too far away, and nothing inflames the ire of a female moose more than sensing that her calf may be in danger. At a full trot, moose can reach speeds of 30-35mph, and have been known to stomp predators, and people, to near death.
The best places and times to view moose near Big Sky are in watery environments: creek bottoms, riparian corridors (Gallatin River and upper Taylor Fork drainages), backcountry lakes and ponds, as well as grassy openings between timber stands in both early morning and late evening hours.
Area golf courses also offer prime habitat with their water hazards, lakes and streams. Just make sure the next time you're playing a late evening round at Big Sky, Yellowstone Club, Spanish Peaks or Moonlight Basin, the next time you reach into your bag for that black shaft Taylor Made driver, make sure it isn't attached to a moose's foot in the process.
