Wildlife //
Pronghorn, often referred to as antelope, are the second fastest animal on Earth and are found on the prairie lands of Southwestern Montana in the Gallatin National Forest near Big Sky.
- Pronghorn migrate the furthest out of any other land mammal in the contiguous United States and their migration routes are quickly diminishing.
- They are the 2nd fastest land mammal on earth thanks to their slender legs and tiny hooves.
- Pronghorn are best viewed from a distance in open prairie land.
Overview
The longest land migration in the contiguous United States is held by the Pronghorn.
Interesting Facts
The pronghorn's field of vision is nearly 360 degrees. This wide field of vision is attributed to the placement of the eyes on the side of the pronghorn's head and the large size of the eyeball. Pronghorns' eyes are as big as 2 inches in diameter - some of the largest eyes in the animal kingdom!
Don't think you can catch a pronghorn on your vacation because these animals have running speeds topping 60 miles per hour making them the second fastest land animal on earth. The are adapted to run fast thanks to their long, slender legs. Unfortunately, they are unable to see fencing up close and can get tangled in the wiring. There is a movement to remove fencing in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to protect their migration corridors.
Best Places for Viewing Pronghorn
Pronghorn prefer open prairie land in valleys. You are most likely to find them in the flats along the Gallatin River or west of the Madison Range near Ennis, Montana.
